The river Irvine divides the parishes of Riccarton and Kilmarnock and the river used to form the boundary between the districts of Kyle and Cunninghame.〔Adamson, Archibald R. (1875). Riccarton is also sometimes called Ellerslie.〔(The Clan Wallace. )〕 In 1875 Riccarton had a population of 1889,〔Adamson, Archibald R. (1875). Rambles Round Kilmarnock. Pub. T. Stevenson. Kilmarnock.
